February 12th 2013 - Student Colloquium & Valentines Day Meet & Greet
This valentines day will surely be a mathematical one as the Math Club hosts another weekly Student Colloquium and hosts a Valentines Day Chilis Meet and Greet.
THURSDAY:
3:30-4:30 Student Colloquium DM 409 A
Title: What is Algebraic Number Theory?
Presenter: Eric Wawerczyk
Abstract: We will discuss the origins of Algebraic Number Theory through the initial work of Kummer, Dedekind, and Gauss on integers over extensions of the rational numbers. The main observations made were the non-unique factorization of integers and the "splitting" of prime numbers (2 = (1+i)(1-i) ). Afterwards we will see how invariants like the Ideal Class Group and the Discriminant of a Number field were able to classify and answer these problems.
8:00-10:00 Valentines Day Chilis Meet & Greet
Location: Chili's Grill & Bar
8696 NW 13th Terrace, Miami, FL 33126
Bring your valentine to meet the e-board and members of the Math Club as we hang out and eat at Chilis.
Also stay tuned for the following upcoming events:
2/21/2013 - Student Colloquium
2/28/2013 - GENERAL MEETING & Movie Night

February 6th, 2013 - First student colloquium
We would like to first thank those members who made it to last week's general meeting and game night to help make it such a great success! This week, Thursday, will be the first Student Colloquium presented by our very own club President. Be sure to attend!
Title: Insolvability of the Quintic
Place: DM 409 A
Time: 3:30-4:30
Speaker: Eric Wawerczyk
Abstract:
The talk will discuss the motivation and ideas which lead to the formulation and execution of a proof that there can exist no "quadratic formula" for degree 5 polynomials. We will describe the techniques to solve polynomials of degree 1, 2, 3, and 4 to motivate the ideas of Field Extensions. The concept of symmetry and groups will be discussed as well. A polynomial will be assigned a group and we will state the theorem that "A polynomial is solvable by radicals if and only if it's corresponding group is a solvable group". We will see how this relationship between polynomials and groups allow us to affirm there are no algebraic formulae for an arbitrary degree five polynomial's roots.
Also, Executive Board Elections will be held at the next General Meeting! The following positions are available:
President
Vice President
Treasurer
Secretary
Events Coordinator
CSO Representative
Historian
Those interested in running for office should e-mail us for more questions and or fill out the APPLICATION FOR OFFICE on our Orgsync page!
Best regards,
